Two years have passed since Edward Elric was dragged from his home world through the Gate of Alchemy to the parallel world of Earth in the year 1923, which is fundamentally governed by the laws of modern science instead of alchemy. Stripped of his alchemical powers and his newly restored arm and leg, Edward researches rocketry in Munich, Germany with his friend Alfons Heiderich, a young man who resembles his brother Alphonse, in the hopes of returning to his world. One day, Edward rescues a troubled, persecuted gypsy woman named Noah from being sold. Noah is taken in by Edward to live with him and Alfons, and begins having visions concerning Edward's life in his world. The next day, Edward meets Fritz Lang, a Jewish film director resembling King Bradley, who persuades Edward into helping him hunt down a dragon he has been seeking for inspiration for his next film. The dragon, which turns out to be homunculus Envy(An evil demon that is like a witch), attacks Edward until he is weakened and captured by members of the Thule Society. The theme of the book are the 7 deadly sins. Because there are 7 different villainous characters in the book with the names of the sins. All leading up to the deadliest theme, Envy.
Lust is an extreme craving for the pleasures of the body.
Gluttony is the extreme desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation, jealousy in other words.
Sloth is the lazy type, one who avoids work or labor.
Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise.
Anger/Wrath replaces love with fury. May think the word is against them.
Greed is the desire for wealth or gain, ignoring all other factors.
The setting wouldn’t change. Because in both worlds they have all the witches, dragons and everything. The reason why he is in the parallel universe is because he sacrificed his life for his brother’s. He met his dad and is living with him in the parallel universe, on Earth he never met his dad. The character “Wrath” at first was a lost kid in the jungle that didn’t even know why he was on earth. When Edward found him, he treated him as a friend and he loved him. But when “Envy” found “Wrath” and stole him from Edward, “Wrath” started realizing why he was on earth. He had a purpose, to kill all the alchemists at all costs. While Edward Elric was always a 14 year old kid who wanted to pursue his dream to achieve the philosophers stone, He was always persistent and Eager. Always jumping the gun. But towards the end, as he sacrificed his life for his brother, he became brave, patient, and loyal. Everyone saw the difference at that moment, they then build a statue of him years later.
The structure of the book was understandable, clear, perfect. The flashbacks were used at the right time. I was never lost in the book. It gave me a complete understanding to where why he lost his arm and leg which was explained later in the book. What happened to his mother and his brother and everything. It was perfect. For example it would say “I remember when I lost my leg and arm, trying to save my brothers soul, which was being dragged into hell.” It completely explained what happened during the event 6 years ago.
From goodreads.com - "It's a cruel and random world, but the chaos is all so beautiful." I agree with this. The deaths were so cruel and descriptive it actually disgusted me, made me feel pain in my veins.
"Humankind cannot gain something without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. This is Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth." This does make sense in real life though, To be a great basketball player, one must endure pain, suffer from injuries, be able to accept the people that hate you, and those who love you.
"Even when our eyes are closed, there's a whole world that exists outside ourselves and our dreams." I never heard this before and its kind of hard to understand. There is another world out there, that exists. Not in our dreams or outside ourselves. This really makes me think of all the possibilities there are in the universe.
